Here's a fun and easy-to-learn game called Did I Catch Your Name? that helps youth learn each other's names. This is great for new groups or any group that has new members in attendance.
First, gather a whole lot of indoor-safe balls. Next, have the group sit in a circle. Starting with the leader, have each person say their name (do this several times) until each person knows who is seated on their right side. Have each person say the name of the person seated on their right. Next, have the group "scramble" by moving to new seats, the only tip is "try not to sit next to anyone you were previously seated next to". Now, you are ready to play the game. It's an elimination game, so try no to make a mistake. The game starts when the leader says the name of the person who was previously seated on their right and tosses them a ball. That person must catch the ball and then say the name of the person who was previously seated on their right. Play continues until the ball gets back to the leader. Go slowly for the first round and be sure everyone knows how to play. Once the real game begins, if you touch the ball with your hands and drop it, you are eliminated from the game. If this happens, the person that had been throwing the ball to you must now throw the ball to the person you were throwing to. If you are eliminated, be sure to tell the person who is throwing to you who they are now supposed to throw to and let that person know they now have a new person they will receive balls from... of course, it should be pretty obvious since that person will be screaming their name before they throw the ball to them. As the group gets good at this, try more balls, strange shaped objects like sofa pillows or introduce new rules like "When you catch a ball, you have to stand up and turn around before you can throw to your person. This gets pretty wild pretty quickly, but it is fun and really helps people learn names since you hear them said multiple times in a short period. |
